The Vineyard
The vineyard that serves as the birthplace of the stunning Lugar do Gato , and is located on terraces, in the good and ancestral Douro manner, spreads over approximately two hectares and incorporates four famous grape varieties, distributed in geographically equitable proportions: Touriga Nacional, Jaen, Alfrocheiro and Tinta Roriz. It should also be noted that the remarkable maturation of its pomes is strongly impacted by a local microclimate, which encourages the obtaining of exceptional harvests, in a limited and, consequently, even more precious production.
It is also worth highlighting the existence of old vine strains, predominantly of a white nature, which are more than half a century old, a circumstance that, in itself, and not the numerous and polyvalent arguments previously presented, justifies, not only a visit this unique space, as well as enjoying what is established as the maximum exponent of its oenological excellence, Lugar do Gato .
Touriga Nacional
Originally from Portugal, it can be found in various areas of the territory, but it is in the Dão and Lafões region that it shows all its greatness.
The bunch is small and elongated, with thick skin that gives the wine an intense and deep color.
This variety, rich in floral and fruity aromas, contributes to balanced wines and a good alcohol content.
Jaen
Its origin is still a bit mysterious, but certainly not far from Portuguese borders. Unmissable in the Dão and Lafões region, it is in this area that it reveals all its quality.
This variety produces a medium-sized and compact bunch with very juicy pulp and a blue-black skin.
With its winemaking, Jaen provides aromas of wild fruits, regular production and alcohol content.
Alfrocheiro
Of unknown origin, it has greater expression in the Dão and Lafões region, but with expansion to the south, it offers a great balance between alcohol, tannins and acidity.
It produces a must rich in color, with a small, compact bunch and a thin skin.
The wines produced with this variety are often delicate and structured, with aromas of wild fruits and strawberries.
Roriz Ink
Predominant in Spain, it is a very old grape variety, with its high quality it spread throughout the Iberian Peninsula and is also found in the Dão and Lafões region.
It has a long and large bunch, originating wines with a high alcohol content, low acidity, and with its resistance to oxidation, it is suitable for aging.
This variety produces attractive and fruity wines, with aromas of dark red fruits and great structure.
Old Strains
Planted more than half a century ago by our grandfathers, their origin is based on the planting of the oldest and noblest grape varieties in the region, giving rise to wines with a more intense and elegant aroma, where it is almost never necessary to make corrections in the winemaking process.
This mixture of grape varieties produces very fresh, attractive and long-lasting wines, with great aging capacity.
